Workshop days get touted as a great feature by many training schools. After talking to many computer industry students who have partaken in a couple, you'll discover that they're really a major problem as they hadn't properly considered the following:

- Lots of back and forth visits - normally hundreds of miles at a time.

- Requesting constant holidays or time off - many schools provide Mon-Fri workshop availability and link several days together. This isn't ideal for most people who work, and this is made worse if you include the travel time on top.

- And don't overlook lost holiday time. We typically get 4 weeks annual leave. If half is given up to classes, then we haven't got much left for ourselves.

- Training workshops invariably end up over subscribed.

- Workshop pace - classes can have students of different abilities, so tension develops between students that want a quicker pace to the ones who need a little longer.

- You shouldn't disregard the increased financial outlay of driving or taking public transport or accommodation for the duration either. This may well run to a lot of money - from hundreds to thousands. Sit down and add it up - you may be surprised.

- Do you really want the possibility of getting passed-over for a possible promotion or salary hikes because of your studies.

- We all feel awkward about asking questions in a room full of other students - as we don't want to look silly.

- Being away from home with your work during the week - many trainees have to work or live somewhere else for part of their study. Classes are hard to get to, but the monies have already been handed over in your initial payment.

Wouldn't it be better to simply watch and study with instructors one-on-one from pre-filmed lessons, working on them at your convenience - not somebody else's. Training can take place wherever it suits you. If you have a laptop, why not get some sun outside as you learn. Any difficulties and make use of the 24x7 support. It really doesn't matter how many times you feel you need to repeat something, filmed teachers can never get frustrated with you! Plus, with this method, you can say goodbye to note-taking. Everything is there for you. The bottom line: Reduced hassle, more money in the bank, and you've avoided all travel.

Often, people don't really get what information technology means. It's thrilling, changing, and means you're working on technology that will change our world over the next few decades. We're only just starting to get a handle on how all this change will affect us. How we interrelate with the rest of the world will be significantly affected by technology and the internet.

The standard IT man or woman across the UK can demonstrate that they receive a lot more money than his or her counterpart outside of IT. Mean average incomes are hard to beat nationally. Experts agree that there's a great country-wide demand for professionally qualified IT workers. And with the constant growth in the marketplace, it seems there's going to be for the significant future.

Finding your first job in the industry can feel more straightforward if you're offered a Job Placement Assistance facility. But don't place too much emphasis on it - it isn't unusual for their marketing department to make it sound harder than it is. In reality, the still growing need for IT personnel in Great Britain is why employers will be interested in you.

Get your CV updated straight-away though - look to your training company for advice on how to do this. Don't delay till you've finished your exams. It's not uncommon to find that junior support jobs are offered to students who are still learning and haven't even passed a single exam yet. This will at least get your CV into the 'possible' pile and not the 'no' pile. If you don't want to travel too far to work, then you may well find that a specialist independent regional recruitment consultant or service may be more appropriate than a centralised service, as they're going to be familiar with the jobs that are going locally.

A good number of people, it would appear, spend evenings and weekends on their training and studies (for years sometimes), and just give up when it comes to attempting to secure a job. Promote yourself... Do your best to let employers know about you. Good jobs don't just knock on your door.
